Government Street Cottages. Places to stay in Ocean Springs, MS

11/20/2018 | Tricia McAlvain

Government Street Cottages is the number one go to spot to stay in the City of Ocean Spring's downtown district. Named for the street it is located on, it is the main street running horizontal with the coast to the south and highway 90 to the north. Located amongst the quiet tranquil setting of a church and the Mary C. O'Keefe Museum across the street, the cottages are nestled under huge tranquil trees in a natural landscaped setting. Recently, I had the wonderful experience of soaking it all up for the sole purpose of writing this article. The City of Ocean Springs has always been a top pick of mine from all the cities along the Gulf Coast. I immediately jumped on the chance for a little staycation.

For over 300 years Kiln, Mississippi has been home to the rural wilderness where moonshine legends were made. Staking claim to being the "Moonshine Capital of the World" in the early nineteen hundreds when there were at least 50 moonshine stills operating, it became a national epicenter of bootlegging with international connections. Some of it even ended up in the hands of mobsters like Al Capone.

Why is the Water Brown?

Why is the Water Brown?

8/2/2018 | Connie Raley

So why is it brown? That is a question that I have diligently been asking myself. We have several large rivers carrying detritus, sediment and even clay particles. Detritus is defined as “waste or debris of any kind,” such as gravel, sand or any material caused by erosion; this material is organic in nature and not waste. There is a certain amount of algae laden detritus that is important to the filter feeders, such as jelly fish and oysters.

In 2001, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources began the long, arduous process of requesting legislation to designate the six coastal counties of Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone, and George as a National Heritage Area.
