If you are looking for amazing seafood with waterfront views, McElroy’s on the Bayou in Ocean Springs and McElroy’s Harbor House Seafood Restaurant in Biloxi are just the place for you.
Family owned and operated Mickey McElroy and his wife Jane, the two restaurants are favorites to both locals and tourists alike, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week.
Having been in operation for over thirty years until Hurricane Katrina forced them to rebuild, McElroy’s Harbor House Seafood Restaurant now sits close to thirty feet in the air, offering incredible views of Deer Island and the Gulf of Mexico. You can watch boats coming in and out of Biloxi’s Small Craft Harbor from the outdoor patio, and may even catch a glimpse of porpoises swimming by.
McElroy’s on the Bayou, which opened in 2003, also offers outstanding views. Whether looking out the large picturesque windows, or sitting outside on the deck overlooking beautiful Fort Bayou, it provides the perfect ambiance for eating seafood and other delicious dishes that McElroy’s has become known for.
The McElroy’s menu features a wide variety of items including local fried, grilled, and boiled seafood, steak, chicken, sandwiches, salads, Po’boys, and more.
You will want to start with an appetizer or two such as the popular House Bread, which has shrimp, lump crab, and a cream sauce spread on toasted French bread, topped with either Pepper Jack, Swiss, Cheddar, or American cheese. The fresh raw oysters on the half shell are always a treat, or get them chargrilled with a New Orleans style BBQ sauce topped with shredded parmesan & parsley. The Seafood Gumbo is also a favorite, made from the same recipe Mickey’s father and mother used when they opened the original Harbor House.
You can’t go wrong with one of the McElroy’s House Specialties. I found this out firsthand when Mickey suggested I try the Bayou Special. This tasty dish consists of a large snapper filet either broiled, fried, or blackened, topped with sautéed lump crab meat and a Cajun cream sauce. The blackened version had just the right amount of kick, pairing perfectly with the Jalapeno Hush Puppies that comes with it.
The Shrimp & Grits is also a big seller, and can be ordered for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The fried grit cake is topped with sautéed shrimp, green onions, and a creamy sauce. The Shrimp Scampi is also popular, sautéed with white wine, garlic, chopped parsley, and a creamy lemon sauce over a bed of pasta.
Besides the numerous seafood options, you can also find traditional fare such as a chargrilled ribeye steak or their Smothered Grilled Chicken Breast, which is topped with mushrooms, onions, and Pepper Jack cheese. They also serve Po’boys, and even have a "Little Fisherman” menu for children twelve and under.
Both McElroy’s Harbor House and McElroy’s on the Bayou are open seven days a week from 7am-9pm, with Harbor House staying open until 10pm on weekends. They feature weekly lunch and dinner specials, as well as a Happy Hour from 3-7pm from their full service bars. They also are the perfect place to host wedding rehearsal dinners and other private parties.
